Mitsubishi has announced that the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, has achieved a key milestone with 200,000 global sales to date.

The Outlander PHEV was launched way back in 2013.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is Mitsubishi’s technology flagship and its success demonstrates the scale of consumer demand for electrified vehicles as the motoring industry undergoes a profound technological change.

Since making its debut in Japan, the Outlander PHEV has been rolled out to more than 50 countries globally and in doing so has become the world’s best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle.

More importantly it also has been Europe’s best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle continuously over the past four years (2015-2018) and has been the UK’s best-selling plug-in vehicle of any type since its launch. Of course for the first three years there was not much serious competition. Now there are more and more good Plug In vehicles available: Mini, Volvo, BMW and Mercedes to name a few. – But can they ship them in volume?

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is unique in offering electric drive motors at the front and rear, ensuring genuine all-wheel-drive traction at all times, combined with a 2.4-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine to produce a lively 221hp, while still delivering 46g/km (WLTP) CO2 emissions and an official WLTP economy figure of 139mpg. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV also has a pure electric range of 28 electric miles (WLTP), further contributing to a cleaner and quieter environment.

The Outlander PHEV has picked up various awards globally in the past six years, the latest of which have included the “2019 Best Plug-in Vehicle” award from Company Car and Van Magazine in the UK and the “2019 Green SUV of the Year” award from Green Car Journal in the US.
